Mauyak and Calf nursing - Shedd Aquarium

Mauyak's calf is one week and two days old! The little beluga's swimming skills and coordination improve every day. He experiments with his buoyancy, trying to swim upside down and otherwise mimicking mom's moves—although her pirouette still eludes him. (Because we don't like the pronoun "it" for such a personable little animal, we're going to use "him" to refer to the calf until we have irrefutable evidence of the gender.) He can get down to the bottom of Secluded Bay with mom as she scratches her back on the habitat floor—a favorite behavior of hers, but still a puzzlement to the calf. In the quiet environment of Secluded Bay, they continue to build their bond, pair swimming and nuzzling. All this learning for the calf works up an appetite, which he satisfies about every half-hour. His nursing times went from a total of 30 minutes a day when he was a newborn up to more than 55 minutes late last week. As he becomes more efficient at getting milk, however—and you can see how well he latches onto mom in this video—his nursing times are back to 30 minutes a day. We hope to see those fetal folds in his sides start to fill out as he gains weight!
